What to Pack for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Your pack weight is your constant companion for 9–11 days on the trail. Our guides have refined this list over hundreds of treks — bring exactly what is here, nothing more.
Clothing Layers
The key is a layering system, not heavy individual pieces. You need: a moisture-wicking base layer (merino wool is best), a mid-layer fleece or down jacket, a waterproof and windproof outer shell, trekking trousers (no denim), and thermal leggings for camp evenings. Temperatures at base camp can drop to −10°C at night.
Footwear
Break in your boots before the trek — this is non-negotiable. Mid-ankle waterproof trekking boots are ideal. Bring lightweight camp shoes or sandals for teahouse evenings. Gaiters are useful in early spring and winter. A good pair of trekking poles significantly reduces knee strain on descent.
Sleeping & Shelter
A sleeping bag rated to −10°C is essential. Teahouses provide blankets but quality varies significantly. A lightweight sleeping bag liner adds warmth and hygiene. Sunglasses with UV400 or higher protection are critical at altitude.
What to Leave Behind
Do not bring: cotton clothing (holds moisture), wheeled luggage, more than 12kg total pack weight, hair dryers or heavy toiletries. Your porter carries a maximum of 20kg — shared between their own load and yours. Respect that limit.
